Dan’s PlantsBird of Paradise
In late April 2017 Dan’s Plants approached Immij to develop a new label for Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae). They had a concept in mind which would drive sales of the plants when they are not in flower. Bird of Paradise have exceptionally striking flowers but when not in flower the emerging flower stems can look a little dull and move slowly. Their concept was to develop a label exactly in the shape of a Bird of Paradise flower which would attach to the top of the flower stem to give the impression that the plant was in fact in flower.
The idea posed a few difficulties as the commonly used method of attaching labels to plants with twist ties would not have worked in this case. Dan’s Plants provided a rough prototype of the label and Immij went to work on its development.
Action Plan
The first step in the process was to locate an outstanding image of the Bird of Paradise flower. A search of the Floramedia Image Library quickly located the perfect image. This label would be printed in full colour on both sides so that the label would give the impression that it was a real flower when viewed from any angle.
The next challenge was to develop a means of attaching the label to the flower stem. Because Bird of Paradise flower stems vary widely in width, the locking mechanism needed to be adjustable to work on various stem sizes. Through much tweaking, testing and modification, a label prototype was developed with a unique locking mechanism. Label artwork was then developed which incorporated the locking mechanism.

The finished prototype was then presented to Dan’s Plants who suggested some alterations to the locking mechanism. Following these alterations being made the label was approved to print on May 8th 2017. The labels were printed and dispatched on May 18th 2017. The whole process from start to finish took three weeks which really demonstrates that Immij makes the process of complex custom labelling easy and effective.

Feedback
Feedback on the label from Dan’s Plants was very positive. Their customers thought that the Bird of Paradise plants were in flower and only realised they were labels when they got very close to the plants. Aside from meeting the requirement to develop a label to improve sales when plants were not in flower, the label provided great novelty value, interest and a talking point for Dan’s customers.
